Sunsetting Atom

When Did You Use Atom Last Time

I did not use Atom for a while, maybe 1 or 2 years. Today I saw the news regarding the announcement of end of life of Atom. Atom and all repositories under Atom will be archived on December 15, 2022 is showned as a banner on the Atom website. You can also refer to Github's blog for official announcement.

"When was my last time to launch Atom?" and I can't recall that. Phew. No wonder the announcement comes.

Productivity or Lightweight First

I did not use Atom for a while since Atom plays an awkward role for me.

It is not so lightweight when I need a lightweight editor. For example, I use vim to edit files in a environment like headless server that needs a lightweight editor.

It is not so productive for me when I need to focus on something and setup my development environment as soon as possible. When I need an IDE, I just use an IDE like PyCharmor VS Code. When I need to write a book or articles about a topic, I just use editors like Obsidian that help you focus on wirting and more knowledge nodes to stimulate you to write.

Even more, VS Code is essentially "owned" by the same company a.k.a. Microsoft (indirectly). It is not a good idea to make one's own product a competitor of the other product owned by themselves.
